I’m sure despite my disclosure note, I’m sure some, if not most, will disagree with my opinions. Please take note as you read this, however, that I do not in any way shape or form condone what Bernie Madoff did.
I just don’t understand why prison is the price he must pay. I don’t ask because I think he deserves something more lenient, but because I, as a taxpaying citizen of this country do not wish my tax dollars to pay for his care. In times like this, I can’t help but think of one of my favourite movies and an apropos line therein… “Let the punishment fit the crime.” (the movie I refer to is The Parent Trap original)
If the man is accused and convicted of stealing money from investors, his assests should be seized (as they have done) but then he should be employed in the lowliest of jobs to continue paying off what he owes til his death. That way no taxpayers have to pay for his “living expenses”.
In an era where prisons are being over-crowded, it seems that there should be alternative punishment rather than always just tossing someone in prison. I seriously doubt that Madoff or his wife would find much joy in living hand to mouth after most of a lifetime living in the lap of luxury.

I suppose that making sure that Madoff stays in that lowly job, doesn’t do any work on the side, doesn’t sell any media rights, isn’t planning to do a runner – well, that all costs tax dollars too. Plus he would probably need round-the-clock security to protect him from the people he shafted.
It’s probably no more expensive, and it’s certainly easier, just to stick him in prison. There’s also less potential for the authorities to be embarrassed, which is an important factor (for them).
I agree with you in principle, I really do, but I think the practicalities make prison the best option.
